A copywriter, proofreader and content writer who understands health and community businesses

Hi! I’m Steph. It’s nice to see you here.

My career of – yikes! – twenty-something years has included occupational therapy, public health, community development and the disability sector. It’s been a pretty fun ride, as a whole.

But writing has led me to the world of freelancing, and I’m glad it has. I love helping people find their voice through the content we create together.

Becoming a writer: finding the words

After completing a Master of Public Health (which involved a lot of writing), I moved to India to work in the community development sector. It was during this time, while blogging my experiences, that the true joy of the written word found its place in my soul.

So I embarked on a series of courses, from creative writing to features, content and copywriting. And in 2020, when it became clear that my sourdough-baking skills weren’t going to take me anywhere, I decided to become a writer instead.*

*Full disclosure: I have no sourdough-baking skills. Or any kind of baking skills, really.

As well as a range of website copy and content projects, I’ve written short stories and magazine feature articles, and I’m working on my first novel.

With my health professional background, I find translating ‘clinical speak’ into accessible messages deeply rewarding. There’s satisfaction in knowing I’ve given a client information they can relate to.

So if health content is what you’re after, I will happily take clinical material and convert it to everyday, jargon-free language to suit your audience.

But it’s not just health. I also write for hospitality, international development and other non-profits, tourism, and (insert your field here!).

What I care about

My values guide who I am, who I strive to be and how I work. Here are some of them:

  • Inclusion: I value people, as they are, regardless of gender identity, race, beliefs, cultural background, disability or chip flavour preference.
  • Accessibility: I value content that is readable for any audience, and I draw on accessibility guidelines to do this well. If you notice any access issues in my writing, I welcome your feedback.
  • Justice: I believe that the world is unbalanced, and that people across the globe are impacted by my Western lifestyle and consumer choices. Where possible my actions, decisions and words will work towards addressing that imbalance.
  • Acknowledgement: I recognise the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional owners of the land on which I live and work. I pay respect to elders past and present, and I'm grateful for the generations of care for this beautiful land I now call home.
  • Kindness: I value respect, and seek to create content that respects consumers.
  • Getting it right: While this seems (and is!) trivial compared with the values above, I do care about grammar, spelling and the other bits and pieces that create a pleasant reading experience.

A bit more about me

A Melbourne girl until recently, I now live on Wadawurrung Country in a small town just outside Geelong. It's the kind of place where you're surrounded by open fields and colourful birds but you can still walk to the shops. Not gonna lie, it's pretty great.

I love brunch, good books and short jogs that don’t involve too many hills. In 2015, I started knitting a scarf – and I fully intend to finish it one day.
